Life without ambition is aimless wandering

July 28, 200910:06pm

One should always have a definite objective in a walk, as in life it is so much more satisfying to reach a target by personal effort than to wander aimlessly. An objective is an ambition, and life without ambition is … well, aimless wandering.

Pub quizzes and quiz nights

10:26am

Something excellent needs to be done with this database of quiz nights in london. I see an iPhone app integrated with Google maps to assist the avid quiz goer to their next victory.

Sasha’s favourite places in London

July 27, 20095:12pm

Premier 90s DJ/Producer/remixer Sasha has a Google map of his favourite places in London. I think I may pop along to the Japanese Knife Company on Blandford Street. Other celebs map their favourate places in london.

Life should be lived on the edge

4:19pm

To me, it’s really so simple, that life should be lived on the edge. You have to exercise rebellion. To refuse to tape yourself to the rules, to refuse your own success, to refuse to repeat yourself, to see every day, every year, every idea as a true challenge. Then you will live your life on the tightrope.

Cleaning glasses

3:55pm

Glad to see I’m not alone in a slightly anal obsession in always drinking from a perfectly clean wine glass

I wouldn’t use a dishwasher for wine glasses. I’d also avoid turning them upside down on a cloth to dry them: this can make the rim a bit smelly. It’s really worth the effort of washing glasses well before you put them away, because then you can use them without worrying about whether they are going to be smelly or not. If you are in doubt about a glass, a quick rinse with wine primes the glass nicely.

Black and White Clock

I want this Black and White clock by Vadim Kibardin

A light sensor will switch the clock to an invert mode: the figures are white in the dark time of day and black at daytime.

The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces

July 22, 20094:58pm

Tantilisingly short excerpt from a documentary about human behavior within urban spaces.

The most used plazas tend to have a higher proportion of people in twos and threes than the less successful ones. But the most sociable plazas also have in absolute numbers the greatest number of individuals. A busy place, for some reason, seems to be the most congenial kind of place if you want to be alone.

I’d love to see the whole film. via kottke.org

Collect Data About Yourself with Twitter

July 15, 200910:12am

Personal data collection made easy with your.flowingdata. A necessity for the avid statophile.

The real strength of your.flowingdata is exploration of personal trends over time. Like most data, your data is going to get more interesting the longer you collect.

This is why you use YFD the same way that you use Twitter. YFD was designed to be unobtrusive. You simply send direct messages about what you’re doing, what you have done, or what’s going on around you.
